Microsoft Server 2003 will be end shelved as of June 30, 2009 – well sort of.
As of July 1st, you will have to purchase Windows Server 2008 – but then you can install a downgrade of Windows Server 2003. Don’t try to apply any logic – this is Microsoft. The reason this is done is so they can say “sales” of Windows Server 2008 are “x” (which makes the number look bigger than it is).
We like Windows Server 2008, and have not found any issues. We do not see a reason to upgrade to 2008, but 2008 is not for everyone. There are still many vendors who have not embraced 2008 – so we still recommend 2003 for most clients.
