FixWin a free utility for Windows 7

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

ust came across FixWin a free utility for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. FixWin is interesting because all it does is a fix 50 known issues in Windows 7 and Windows Vista with 10 fixes under 5 different categories. FixWin doesn’t identify or diagnose a problem for you but if you know you do have a problem that FixWin can resolve then the resolution is just click away.

FixWin is a portable application meaning it doesn’t need installation on your system. Simply unzip the download and run the FixWin application. It’s that simple.

Interestingly, FixWin can help you run System File Checker a well known Windows utility which basically checks for corrupt system files and replaces them and can help you create a Restore point before fixing the issues.

Windows Explorer

Internet & Network connectivity

Windows Media

Fix for Windows 7 Print spooler hangs (HP Printers) | Windows Reference

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

In my windows 7 machine Print spooler hangs with HP 1600 for some reason

Solution to fix

Uncheck Enable Bidirectional on the Ports tab of the printer properties on the machine sharing the printer. The HP language monitor needs access to a resource that only the local administrator has. When you restart the spooler the jobs are scheduled in system context rather than the users context.

When you installed the printer, the driver default is Enabled. This solution has worked since Server 2003. HP fixed the issue with high end Laser devices but some drivers never got updated but new drivers for the new printers have the fix.

Change timeout value for WebDAV

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The value of the WebDAV timeout cache in Windows® 7 is 60 seconds. In order to change the time out cache value, you will need to modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRxDAV\Parameters\FileNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec  registry key. This action is necessary because there is no mechanism in place that will flush the cache on demand.

Modifying the registry key

1. At the command prompt, run the Regedit command. This opens the Registry Editor.

2. Locate and then double click on the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MRxDAV\Parameters\FileNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec.

3. In the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value dialog box, change the value in the Value data: text box to your desired value and click OK. The value of the WebDAV timeout cache has now been changed.

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Swiftec IT has moved from Northborough to Shrewsbury, tripling its space.

The company, which acquired SK Technologies Inc. of Northborough early this year, said it simply outgrew its 800-square-foot Northborough headquarters.

Swiftec’s new, 2,500-square-foot location at 745 Main St. in Shrewsbury is being renovated, and work is expected to be complete by the end of the month, Adam Winter, the company’s president, said in an e-mail.

Winter, as CMF Ventures LLC, bought the Shrewsbury building in September for $295,000 according to county land records.

Winter said the company currently employs six people and expects to add two more by the end of the year.

Swiftec is an IT company that provides computer and network support services to small- and mid-size businesses in the MetroWest region. It was founded by Winter, a Clark University MBA.

Verizon ISP change # 2

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Your Attention Needed: Re-configure Your Email Settings to Send Email Most common email viruses are sent using port 25 to infect computers. Often times the user never knows their computer has been infected. In order to protect our customers, Verizon has turned off the ability to send email using port 25 for all users other than those using a @verizon.net email address.

If you want immediate step-by-step instructions, visit change my port settings to 587 now.

What is outbound port 25 blocking?

Outbound port 25 blocking is a network configuration change that will prevent computers on the Verizon network from connecting to servers outside of our network. Servers outside the Verizon network use a method commonly employed to send unauthenticated, unsolicited e-mail or “spam”.

Why is Verizon blocking outbound port 25?

The majority of spam (unsolicited email) on the Internet is caused by malicious software viruses that take control of infected computers. These viruses direct the infected machines to send email through port 25. Verizon takes spam very seriously. Verizon blocks outgoing connections on port 25 to prevent infected computers from being used by spammers to send unsolicited email. Outbound port 25 blocking is a standard industry method to control spam.

When will outbound port 25 blocking be implemented?

We will begin implementing outbound port 25 blocking in the first quarter of 2009.

Will outbound port 25 blocking apply to all Verizon broadband customers?

Outbound port 25 blocking will be applied to FIOS and High Speed Internet services that use dynamic IP addresses. If you subscribe to a static IP address service, you will not be affected.

Do I have a dynamic IP address?

If you have standard residential or business FIOS / High Speed Internet service, you have a dynamic IP address. Static IP packages are sold as an upgraded service.

Will I be impacted by port 25 blocking?

If you have a dynamic IP address and you use a third party email account to send email from a desktop client such as Outlook®, Outlook Express® or similar programs, you may be affected and should continue to read this notice. If you are using email provided as part of your VErizon service or a web-based email account from another provider, you will not be affected.

How do I determine if I am using a third party email account?

If your email address is not part of your Verizon FiOS or High Speed Internet Service, and it does NOT end with @verizon.net, you are using a third party account.

Do I have to change my Verizon.net email account settings?

No. Subscribers using Verizon email services will not be impacted.

I am using a third party email account that I access using my web browser. Will I be affected?

No. Web-based email services will not be impacted.

I am using a third party email account. I also use a desktop client to manage my email. What must I do to continue using my third party service?

You have three options:

  1. Change your email client to send email using port 587. Click step-by-step instructions to change your port settings now.
  2. Use web based email services. Web based e-mail is unaffected by port 25 blocking. Check with your e-mail provider to see if web based access is available.
  3. Upgrade to a FIOS or High Speed Internet account with static IP addressing. Business customers may subscribe to static IP addressing.

What is Message Submission?Message submission is an alternate way to send email which is not affected by outbound port 25 filtering.
Is there a whitelist or exemption process? No.
