PC Maintenance Tip
The most significant maintenance issue we see is not having the latest SECURITY patche
s from Microsoft. Why are these important? Because Microsoft has the largest group of beta testers in the world (you and me ) and they frequently find security holes and bugs (aka features) in their software. Malicious hackers with nothing better to do create viruses which attack the computers that do not have the latest patches.
What can you do about it?For starters, leave your computers on overnight. (A computer uses the same amount of electricity if you leave it on overnight as it does in the second you turn it on in the morning.) Your computer will automatically download critical updates at 3am. If this automated program has not been run during the last three months, then you may need to help it along with updates from http://update.microsoft.com/ . Choose EXPRESS when asked.

Web Site Design

Here are two suggestions about how others look at your site:
#1) Open your web site. What is the first thing you see? Is it your tagline, a picture or a summary of what you do? What is the first thing you want your customers to see?
#2) Sometimes low tech is better. When you go to a web site, do you want to see movies and pop-ups, or do you want the information you are looking for? Too many web sites today use flash introductions which are very nice, but they increase the amount of time it takes for you to find what you are looking for and they are distracting.

 Wireless
Do you have financial or confidential data on any of your computers? Do you have a wireless network? When you look at your wireless signal (the access point list) do you see a lock next to your access point? If not, you may be sharing your information with anyone who wants to see it.
How to fix it
Log into the access point (usually something
similar to 192.168.1.1) , click on SECURITY, choose WEP authentication, and type in a PASSPHRASE. The KEY which is provided will be needed (so write it down). This key needs to be entered into each wireless client, so that only authorized computers have access.
